Curly hair
If you have curly hair, you already know that taking care of it can take time. Unlike straight and wavy hair, curly hair is often associated with an increased likelihood of breakage, frizz and dryness, among other things. You've probably already encountered at least one or two of these problems in your quest for bouncy, frizz-free curls.
Wash your hair less often
Although how often you wash your hair is entirely up to you and a number of other factors such as scalp moisture and sebum secretion. It is recommended that if you have curly hair, you should keep washing to a minimum. In other words, you should refrain from washing your hair every day. Curly hair needs natural oils to stay healthy, and shampooing too often can lead to dryness, causing damage and breakage. So it's best to wash your hair once or twice a week.
Don't skip the conditioner
The texture of curly hair is usually dry and dull, so it's important to keep these delicate strands well moisturized. So don't skip the conditioner. A moisturizing conditioner that's specifically formulated for curly hair will help provide a healthy dose of hydration, nourishment and protection that hair can't get from shampoo alone. Just be sure to look for ingredients that are healthy for hair, such as coconut oil, shea butter, avocado oil and aloe vera.
If your curls are flat, try rinsing your hair upside down. Rinsing your hair with your head tilted up can flatten your curls, causing them to lose volume.
Don't wait long to apply styling products
When it comes to curly hair, the sooner you style your curls, the better, so it's recommended to apply styling products while your hair is still very wet and before it starts to frizz. If you wait too long, it can damage the hair's cuticles, causing curls to become frizzy and undefined. When applying products, remember to also distribute them with closed hands, being careful not to comb through fine curls, as this can also cause frizz and damage .
Dry your hair the right way
Air drying your hair whenever possible is the best choice for those with curly hair. If you're going to blow dry your hair with a hair dryer, add a diffuser attachment to reduce the amount of direct heat and strong air hitting your strands. By using a diffuser, you'll be able to prevent excessive tossing of your hair while drying, which in turn will result in less friction and therefore less frizz.
Use a leave-in conditioner
It's not enough to just condition your hair in the shower. Curly hair needs long-lasting hydration and protection, so we strongly recommend investing in a lightweight leave-in conditioner. In addition to providing hair with a heavy dose of long-lasting moisture and nourishment, it also creates a protective barrier around the strands that helps block those things that can damage curls, such as frizz, breakage and UV damage.
Don't use products with sulfates
While we always try to stay away from products containing sulfates, this is especially important when you're dealing with curly hair. Sulfates strip and dehydrate strands, causing them to become brittle and frizzy. When it comes to textured hair, you want to look for moisture-based products that gently nourish strands without stripping them of their natural oils.
Protect your hair while you sleep
It may seem a bit challenging, but protecting your hair while you sleep is a key step in curly hair care. No matter how expensive your sheets may be, their cotton fabric is still too rough for your delicate strands. Cotton also absorbs your hair's natural oils as you sleep, stripping it of moisture. To remedy this, try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf or sleeping on a silk pillowcase, which will help preserve your curls and reduce the friction they are exposed to throughout the night. In the morning your curls will be smooth, shiny and full of life!
